The Mary Project
Crosswalk Mural Traffic Safety Initiative
”California has the nation’s highest number of pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities.”
The Mary Project is a Crosswalk Mural Traffic Safety Initiative by Los Angeles based Artist Sarah Chang, in partnership with City of Los Angeles, Metro and LADOT’s People Street Project. The artist was inspired to create The Mary Project, after her younger sister was struck by an intoxicated driver in a horrific accident, while crossing the street to her school bus stop. The impact of this event and trauma early in the artist’s childhood, has continued to shape the way she experiences the world and nurture her passion for finding ways to integrate public art as a creative solution to improving transportation/pedestrian safety.
A series of 15 Public Art - Crosswalk Mural – Installations, one eventually in every council district is envisioned, as well as Pedestrian and Transportation Safety workshops created in collaboration with community centers and local schools to teach traffic safety and accident prevention methods through art.
Each Crosswalk Mural Installation will include:
- Connecting with key community leaders and members specific to each district to discuss design and selecting a high traffic/risk location.
- Engaging local youth to collaborate and inspire design ideas – while teaching road safety practices.
- The Artist will create a site-specific design inspired by each community
- The permitting and planning process with LADOT, and relevant city departments to address all logistical and technical concerns.
The MARY Project will not only spark vibrancy and community pride in a practical, safe and fun way by creating an engaging atmosphere, but will also encourage individuals and locals to actively teach, partake in and contribute to neighborhood safety.
